For Paint Memphis 2022, I wanted to explore the way that memories of a place you can no longer return to have an impact on the way you remember the place itself. The design went through many iterations but ultimately landed on this final version of the piece. The composition includes two abstract base layer water patterns combined with imagery of a geometric house. All of the elements blend together to create a liminal space where memory and reality converge. It was inspired by a cottage that was central to many of my favorite childhood memories that in the wake of the pandemic I could no longer return to. The details of house remained vivid in my memory even two years later - the unopened bottle of Cointreau sitting on top of the bar that my grandfather always promised he would make margaritas with, the round dining room table covered with a half-finished puzzle, the thin rectangular stained glass window above the yellow suede couch. I sketched versions of the mural that combined my favorite physical details of the house and the memories that I had - stargazing late into the night, flying kites as a child with my sister, and playing Jack and Annie at bird rock with my dad.
